Principals Report
Wow, wow what a fantastic term that we have had and I can not believe we will be on holidays in a few days time. Our students have had so much success in their learning, helping one another and other events that are associated with the school within this term. Last week I was very impressed with the amount of entries that were in the Mount Isa Show by our students. Some of the students were winners and were fortunate to get a little bit of money. Our display was very bright and colourful so thank you to the school officers that helped to highlight our school.
Next term in week 3, I will start to interview our new Prep Students for 2020. If you are aware of any families that would like to join our school can you please let them know and to give the office a call for an enrolment form. We still have a few spaces available.
If your child walks, rides or scooters home could you please have a family discussion about road safety and the importance of heading straight home. We have had several reports of students not acting in a safe and responsible manner when travelling home. I thank you for your assistance in keeping our students safe.
Teachers have been preparing reports for the first semester over the past few weeks. These will be available via the Compass Portal on Wednesday 26th June. If you are unsure of how to log into Compass or are having issues with logging in, please contact our Office staff as soon as possible.
I wish you all a fantastic holiday and please all stay nice and safe. See you on Tuesday 16th July for the beginning of Term 3.
God Bless

The Word
St Paul wrote, “Be careful not to be self-serving. Serve one another in the works of love. Love your neighbour as yourself. If you go about snapping at each other and tearing each other to pieces, you will destroy the whole community”.
Words hurt. Gossip, criticism, name-calling, angry outbursts, making judgments and accusations about others; these are just some of the ways that our words can hurt others. St Paul calls us to love others as we love ourselves. This is lived out through our school motto - Love God, Love One Another.
Love Jesus
You want us to love each other.
We are sorry for the way our words have hurt others.
May our lips speak only words of love.
Amen
Our Patron Saint
St Kieran’s Bell
Saint Kieran was born in Ireland and is one of the first Twelve Irish Saints.
Tradition holds that when St Kieran was 30, he learned of the spread of Christianity and he went to Rome to learn about it. After spending time there, he was consecrated a bishop and was sent back to Ireland to preach the Gospel. Upon his return to Ireland, Kieran met Saint Patrick. Saint Patrick gave Saint Kieran a bell and told him to build a Monastery wherever the bell rang. The Bell rang at Bellhill, Clareen. It was here that Kieran built his monastery and began his work of spreading the Good News of Christ.
Life Education Visit
Donna, Healthy Harold the Giraffe and the Life Education Mobile Learning Centre will be at our school from July 22nd to 24th. We’ll be learning about healthy lifestyle choices and having lots of fun along the way.
Head to our PARENT and CARERS HUB at the link below to have a look at the modules that your kids will be working through. You will find detailed overviews of the modules and fact sheets with 'conversation starter' ideas so that you can carry on discussing the lessons at home. We’re really looking forward to coming to your school.

Fight Against Human Trafficking
ACRATH (Australian Catholic Religious Against Trafficking in Humans) has launched its national fund-raising appeal in a bid to raise $400,000
to continue its work fighting human trafficking and modern slavery, especially forced labour and forced marriage in Australia and globally.
ACRATH now relies entirely on your donations after last year losing its $125,000 a year grant from the Federal Government.

Semester One Reports
Our Semester One Reports are a great way for you to be kept up to date with how your child is going at school. These will be available through the Compass Parent Portal on Wednesday afternoon. If you have any issues logging in or finding your child’s report please contact the office for assistance. Remember to celebrate with your child their success and acknowledge their hard work and growth over the past six months.
NAIDOC Week
This week we celebrate NAIDOC Week as a school community. Throughout this week our students will participate in a range of activities and discussions involving this years theme: Voice. Treaty. Truth.
Voice. Treaty. Truth. were three key elements to the reforms set out in the Uluru Statement from the Heart. These reforms represent the unified position of First Nations Australians. Our Indigenous students will be leading our assembly this Friday to acknowledge and celebrate such an important week. All families are welcome to attend.
We will also be participating in the Mount Isa community NAIDOC march which will be held on Friday the 12th of July as a school community. Your child is welcome to come and march with us in their school uniform. Keep your eye on our Facebook page closer to the event for times and meeting places.
Premier’s Reading Challenge
Planning to chill with a book this holidays?? Then you should definitely be part of the Premier’s Reading Challenge! The Premier's Reading Challenge is an annual statewide initiative for state and non-state schools and home-educated students from Prep to Year 9, as well as children (aged up to five years) enrolled in an early childhood centre.
The Premier's Reading Challenge aims to improve literacy and encourage children to read for pleasure and learning. In 2018, more than 2.46 million books were read by more than 180,000 Queensland children and students from 1,012 schools and 388 early childhood centres.
We have registered for the challenge as a school, information and Reading Logs have been sent home this week. There will also be some great prizes for our school’s top readers so don’t forget to record all of your reading!!
School Officer Day
Last Wednesday we celebrated School Officer Day with the wonderful ladies who work tirelessly behind the scenes at our school. So who are these mythical creatures and what do they get up to all day?? Well here is a run down of our School Officers and the support they give in our school.
Mrs Margaret Ormes - Marg has been at St Kieran’s for the past 24 years. This year she works to support the whole of the Year 5 class as well as individual students in both Prep and Year 5. Marg is a mum of two adult daughters and a very proud grandmother.
Mrs Mell Anderson - Mell has been with Saint Kieran’s for 9 years. This year she has taken on the role in the library, organises home readers and works 5 hours in the Year 3 classroom. Mell is also that crazy, busy looking woman at Fete time who convenes the whole event with the assistance of Brother Walker. Mell is Mum to Maddi who attends Good Shepherd.
Mrs Kellie Pigliafiori - Kellie started at St Kieran’s as our tuckshop lady, but for the past 7 years she has been working in the classrooms. This year Kellie works daily with Miss Merli in our Prep classroom. She also works to support our Indigenous students on their personal learning goals. Kellie is having a huge year as she is one of Mt Isa’s Rodeo Queens all whilst studying to become a teacher. Kellie is Mum to Abbie, Ryder and Taige.
Mrs Jo Schlencker - After many years in the library this year Jo is working with Miss Pereira in the Year Six classroom. Jo delivers specific programs to both small groups and individual students as well as supporting the class as a whole. Jo can be found on Monday mornings hanging out in the Parent Engagement Room running the Little K’s Playgroup. Jo is mum to Helena and Thomas who both attend Good Shepherd.
Mrs Agnes Lagiono - Agnes is now up to her sixth year at our school. This year she can be found for 20 hours a week working with Miss Andrews to support the Year 4 classroom, she also works in the Year 6 room for the rest of her time. Agnes delivers personal and small group programs as well as being the driving force behind our school’s kitchen garden. Her two children, Kaitlyn and Jericho also attend the school.
Mrs Sam Dolzan - Sam has been with us for the past four years. In the past few weeks Sam has moved across into the Year One classroom working with Miss Andrews to support all of the students in the room for 15 hours per week. She works with Literacy groups, individual students and will be tracking sight word and reading progress. She also delivers individual speech programs and works with individual students in the Year Four room on programs that include Maths extension. Sam’s daughters Gabby and Bella attend St Kieran’s and her eldest daughter, Maddison, is now in Year 8 at Good Shepherd.
Mrs Jodie WIlson - Jodie has also been with us for the past four years. Jodie works all across the school supporting Indigenous students working towards their personal goals. Jodie works on daily spelling intervention programs and supports literacy groups in Year One. She also supports students in our Year Three classroom. Jodie is mum to Rhyley (our school captain) and Harrison, who is in Year 9 at Good Shepherd.
Mrs Terri Grosser - Terri is the newest member of our team. Terri spends her mornings supporting literacy groups in Years Three, Two and One. She also works in Year One every Friday supporting all of the students. Terri delivers speech programs and also works on delivering individual programs in the Year Two classroom.
We are also supported by the wonderful casual School Officers Mrs Julie Wallace, Mrs Linda French, Mrs Vanessa Hobbs and Mrs Leanne Munns who jump in and help out whenever they are needed.
As you can see, all of our classes are well supported by an enthusiastic and dedicated team and we hope they enjoyed their luncheon last week!!
Library
Borrowing over the holidays: We welcome borrowing over the holidays as it is a time to wind down and relax so why not do it with a few books.
We know that reading has many benefits. People who read regularly tend to have better general knowledge and better empathy because they are immersed in different places and experiences via different points of view.
Children who are read to usually have a better vocabulary as they are exposed to more unfamiliar words which can be explained to them and used in context.
Reading also improves their concentration skills, as they have to ignore other sounds and competing activities to focus on the page. So try and read more over the holidays
Prep Enrolment
Families seeking enrolment of their child into Prep for 2020 or 2021 are invited to complete an Application for Enrolment, available on our website, in the link below, or alternatively collect an application package from the School Office.
As we are anticipating that there will continue to be strong demand for placements for 2020, it is important that applications are received by the school as soon as possible.
Please note that if you have a sibling of a current St Kieran’s student you will also need to complete an enrolment application for your child for Prep 2020. Students enrolled at St Joseph’s Kindergarten or St Mary Mackillop Early Learning Centre are also required to complete an application form.
St Kieran's Catholic School works in partnership with St Joseph’'s Catholic School and Good Shepherd Parish to coordinate the Prep enrolment process so that the best opportunity is afforded to all.

Over the years our school logo has been through a few changes and it needs to be updated on the school shirt. I thought that it is also time for me to investigate better quality fabric for the students to wear. Which we have found.

Get to know our staff – Mrs Dolzan
Hello, my name is Sam Dolzan and this is my fourth year working at St Kierans, however I have been part of the St Kierans community for the past nine years. I was born and raised in Mount Isa and worked in Local Government here for 18 years, marrying and having my own family. My husband Michael and I have three beautiful daughters, Maddie, Gabby and Bella. My youngest two girls attend St Kierans and my eldest is at Good Shepherd Catholic College. My daughters are quite involved in dancing, netball, silks and gymnastics which keeps me very busy everyday outside of school hours. I enjoy working at St Kierans because it’s wonderful building relationships with the children and watching them learn and grow as great little people.
