Principals Report

In the last two weeks I have experienced much joy and pride within our school.

  • I was so impressed by our Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students who presented a beautiful prayer on Reconciliation. Thank you to Mrs Germaine for preparing our students for that occasion.
  • Our three girls, Ali Thompson who is off to state for cross country and Marine Cardwell and Sienna Wilson Goddard who are now playing softball for North West Queensland.
  • Our Year 6 Quest of knowledge team who completed in Townsville against other schools had such a great experience and really enjoyed their time away. Thank you to Mrs Mawn for giving up your time to take the students.
  • I am also impressed and proud of all of the students who had performed individually on stage for Eisteddfod for either singing, speech, instrumental or dancing. This is such a big thing as it can become very nerve racking and many of them had achieved places.
  • Last night I saw our ensemble singing and they were great. To have students singing from Year 1 to Year 6 is such a nice thing to see. I was very proud of them. Thank you to Mrs Smith for the many hours in preparing our students during choir lessons.
  • Lastly on Wednesday I also watched our two Speech Choirs. To all speak in unison and make movements while they speak is just short of amazing. Thank you to Miss Andrews (4) and Mrs Nel.

I am always amazed and so proud of the effort that our students show and the amount of work and dedication our teachers have for our school. It really is a special place to work at.

It has now been just over a month since we have had to move the pick up area. I would like to thank each and every one of you for your patience and care during pick up times. It has certainly helped the transition to the changes in the pick up area run smoothly. Just a friendly reminder that this zone is not a parking area and is just a pick up and go. If you child does not arrive within 5 mins of pulling up then, please go and park in the carpark. Otherwise I highly recommend of not showing up to school until 2:50 pm as there are not many cars around at all. The new area is at a stand still at the present as they are still waiting for materials to arrive.

We have now hit that time of the year where due to the change in the weather we begin to see more cases of the flu and flu like symptoms. Over the past week, we have had a number of students presenting with some of these symptoms. Some medical conditions require that children be excluded from school in order to prevent the spread of germs among other students and staff. Please see the Time Out Brochure for information regarding exclusion periods in schools. I ask for your help in keeping our school community as healthy as we possibly can during this time.

The cold weather has well and truly arrived over the past few days. As a result, I would like to put out a friendly reminder about the importance of students wearing the correct school uniform. A St Kieran’s green jacket is available for purchase from the school or we have some school jumpers at our second hand uniform shop which is open of a morning. During the cold weather, children are permitted to wear green tights or green tracksuit pants. We encourage the students to wear their school uniform with pride and being dressed in the correct school uniform is how we show pride in being a Kieran’s kid!

God Bless

APRE Report

This Sunday in church to celebrate the Holy Trinity you will hear the following:

Jesus said, “When the Spirit of truth comes he will lead you to complete truth. He will glorify me since all he tells you will be taken from what is mine. Everything the Father has is mine”. (John 16:12-15)

The Father loves the Son and Jesus loves the Father, and from their love the Holy Spirit bursts forth to give life to the world. The love between them is so strong even though each is a unique and individual divine being, they act and love as one.

Trinity Prayer: praying to each person of the Trinity - give praise and thank to the Father; ask forgiveness for your wrong doings from the Son; request help from the Holy Spirit, the source of grace. Conclude with the Glory Be.

Glory be the the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit.
As it was in the beginning,
Is now and ever shall be,
World without end.
Amen

DID YOU KNOW?

Make the sign of the Cross. This gesture contains powerful symbolism connected to the Trinity and baptism. By making this sign you are saying: “I am under the power of the risen Christ, our Redeemer’. The Father, and the Son and the Holy Spirit’ - is traced back to the 2nd Century AD.

Important Information for Parents - Understanding Reports

What are the Achievement Standards in the Australian Curriculum?

The Australian Curriculum specifies the knowledge, understanding and skills to be taught and learned within a given subject area from Prep to year 10. Each content area is accompanied by an Achievement Standard. Achievement Standards refer to the quality of learning (the depth of understanding, extent of knowledge and sophistication of skill) demonstrated by students within a given subject.

Teachers use Achievement Standards at the beginning of a learning period to find out what skills and knowledge individual students bring to a new topic, and then to select the most appropriate content to teach. Teachers also use the Achievement Standards at the end of a reporting period to determine what each student has learnt in relation to the Australian Curriculum.

The Australian Curriculum is designed to be both achievable and challenging and the Achievement Standard for each subject and year group outlines the high level of achievement expected of students.

School based reports continue to provide the rich detail describing the student’s learning programs and information on student strengths, areas for further development, strategies to support and/or extend their learning, student’s social development, and information about the student’s attitude and commitment to learning.

To provide a universally consistent base for school/teacher judgement of student learning across schools, the “C grade” will indicate that the student has demonstrated satisfactory achievement of what is expected against each Achievement Standard.

The learning standard described by each of the Achievement Standards embodies high expectations of learning achievement. To be awarded a “C” grade using these standards represents a significant achievement.

The semester 1 A-E System Report will reflect student progress towards the end-of-year Achievement Standard. The semester 1 grade reflects the level to which a student is ‘on-track’ in achieving their final grade.

The semester 2 A-E System Report is summative and the grades allocated indicate the overall achievement the student has made. This judgment is based on evidence gathered by the teacher throughout the entire year.

Any questions regarding understanding your child’s grades please make a time to see your child’s teacher.

Mel Siemer

HPE With Mrs Lloyd

Over these past few weeks, three of our amazing students have travelled far and wide to represent Mount Isa in regional sporting events and all of these girls have done exceptionally well. Alli Thomson travelled to Normanton to represent Mount Isa in the North West Cross Country trials. Alli won her event!! Congratulations to Alli who will now be travelling to Toowoomba in July for the State Cross Country event! We wish you all the very best Alli!

Sienna Goddard and Marnie Caldwell also travelled to Home Hill to participate in the Northern Region softball trials. Both girls were successful in making it into the Northern Region team to participate in the State Softball Carnival in Cairns at the end of August. What an amazing achievement which reflects the girls’ outstanding softball skills so congratulations to you both.

Our rugby league and netball gala days are fast approaching - these will be held next Thursday 20th June so we wish all student participating in these events the very best!

This week in PE, we are wrapping up our assessment and in senior PE over the next couple of weeks, we will be continuing our soccer games. Junior students will be participating in indigenous games of choice.

WAHOO

This week your of our Year 6 students competed in Townsville at the Quest for Knowledge competition! Townsville Catholic Education kindly sponsored our students to attend this wonderful competition. Congratulations to Kaitlin Laffin, Rhyley Wilson, Beau Kelly and Eliza Hartfiel who were selected to compete. We are all so proud of their efforts. Well done!

Year 1-2: We are learning about the environment. We have been looking at how rain and could are formed, made grass heads and observed them and looked at the plant life cycle.

Year 3-4: We have been learning about Ancient Rome. The students have been researching lots of history and decided to great a project about what they have learnt.

Year 5-6: This term we finished off our survival skills unit and also created the Maze for the Mother's Day Fete which was a huge success. We have also begun planning a State of Origin fun afternoon for the school to enjoy.

Prep Enrolment

Families seeking enrolment of their child into Prep for 2020 or 2021 are invited to complete an Application for Enrolment, available on our website, in the link below, or alternatively collect an application package from the School Office.

As we are anticipating that there will continue to be strong demand for placements for 2020, it is important that applications are received by the school as soon as possible.

Please note that if you have a sibling of a current St Kieran’s student you will also need to complete an enrolment application for your child for Prep 2020. Students enrolled at St Joseph’s Kindergarten or St Mary Mackillop Early Learning Centre are also required to complete an application form.

St Kieran's Catholic School works in partnership with St Joseph’'s Catholic School and Good Shepherd Parish to coordinate the Prep enrolment process so that the best opportunity is afforded to all.

Our New School Shirt

Over the years our school logo has been through a few changes and it needs to be updated on the school shirt. I thought that it is also time for me to investigate better quality fabric for the students to wear. Which we have found.

Below is the original shirt and the new design with two slightly different logos.

Shirt A

New shirt design and the logo is all black.

Shirt B

New shirt design and the logo is black and gold.

Get to know our staff – Mrs Mawn

My Name is Peta Mawn and I have been a part of the St Kieran's team for ten years now. I moved to Mount Isa as a beginning teacher and myself and my husband loved the town so much that we decided to make it our home. I have three beautiful children Oscar, Cooper and Scarlett who keep me on my toes and I enjoy camping, fishing, sport, swimming and music.

I have taught many different year levels at St Kieran's and since having children have returned as the Wahoo Thinking teacher. I thoroughly enjoy this program as it is student lead and enables us to learn about a variety of different topics and explore things in great detail in a variety of ways that interest the children. This year I am also working closely with the class teacher's in a support role enabling me to visit classrooms and students often and work with our wonders staff.

I look forward to many more years here in Mount Isa and as a part of this wonderful school community.
