Principals Report

This time last week the school was a hive of activity preparing for the annual Fete. I was very impressed with the generosity of spirit shown by the school community to ensure that the night went smoothly and everyone had a good time. Even though it was a bit chilli I was so appreciative of all of the families that attended. Thank you again to Mell Anderson and Br Walker who spent endless hours setting up and packing up, as well as all of the other helpers. Congratulations to all our winners, especially to Mrs Sarah Choyce who won the $2,000 draw.

As part of our eSamrt school development I have came across a website called “Cybersafety Guide for Parents and Carers” which has information for parents. This guide below provides important information for parents about cybersafety and cyberbullying. It suggests what you could do if your child is the target or is responsible for inappropriate online behaviour. Needless to say, with cyberbullying on the rise, there is an increasing need for parents and schools to become more ‘cyber-savvy’ with cybersafety. The internet, mobile phones, ipads and instant messaging provide wonderful opportunities for children to learn, be creative and socialise online. They also provide opportunities for inappropriate behaviour, bullying and harassment to occur – causing pain and suffering to the targets of such behaviour. Cyberbullying is when technology, such as email, mobile phones, chat rooms and social networking sites, are used to verbally or socially bully another person. Cybersafety is a broad term referring to appropriate and responsible behaviour online – including online privacy and information protection, good manners and behaviour online, and knowing how to get help to deal with online issues. Please take time to go through this guide and discuss issues and remedies with your children.

Students were asked on Monday’s assembly to make sure they arrived at school before 8.20 a.m. each day so they don’t miss the important start to their morning sessions in the classroom. As I believe organisation is the key, I asked students to think about small ways they can help themselves and their parents (and grandparents) get them ready for school. I am happy to leave the ‘who does what’ up to parents but most of our students are quite capable of helping with lunches and making sure their school shoes, socks and uniforms are ready the night before.

I am greatly encouraged by the parents of St Kieran’s who commit themselves and their time to various committees, boards and projects that in one way or another, benefit the school and the students who attend the school. The Board is presently working on revising policies and giving me great advice on different aspects of the school. The Board is currently needing two new members. If you are interested on becoming part of the Board, please send me an email expressing your interest.

God Bless

APRE Report

The Word

Jesus said, “My sheep Listen to my voice. I know them and they follow me. I give them life forever and they will never be lost.” John 10:27-10

God the Shepherd. The image of God as a shepherd was a powerful one for the Jewish people. The shepherd in Jesus’ time knew each sheep and when the sheep needed to be moved, he would lead them from in front and they would follow. The shepherd would even sleep with them to protect them during the night.

Jesus, you are the good shepherd.
You know each of us by name and you lay down you life for us.
Amen

The Rosary

In May we focus on the Rosary. The Rosary is a prayer to remind us that Jesus loved us so much that he died on the cross for us. The rosary tells the story of Jesus’ life in four parts: The Joyful Mysteries The Sorrowful Mysteries The Glorious Mysteries The Luminous Mysteries Catholics have been given a very special gift in the rosary. Each time we pray the rosary we should focus on Jesus’ life as well as a special person or intention that we want to pray for. By the end of this month student will have prayed the Rosary together.

Communion

At our first Communion we unite with Jesus. When we eat his body and drink his blood, we become one flesh with him. That’s why it’s called ‘communion’; we become one body and one spirit with Jesus. Please keep in your prayers the following St Keiran’s students and their families who will be receiving their first communion over the weekend: Katelyn Boyce, Christopher Byrnes, Isabella Dolzan, Lola Villanueva, Kiana Jacobs, Scarlett Venz Gabe Kelly and Lilly Glover.

World Day of Prayer for Vocations

Today the Church throughout the world prays for vocations. Will you make a special effort to ask the Lord for more vocations to the priesthood and religious life?

  • Pray for the priests who have ministered to you throughout your life, both living and dead.
  • Keep our parish priests in your prayers throughout the week.
  • Encourage your children, grandchildren, or other young people to consider a vocation as a priest or religious brother or sister.
  • Pray a rosary for more young men and women in our diocese to respond to God’s call.

Australian Religious Response to Climate Change (ARRCC)

Pope Francis has called us to care for creation. In response ARRCC is supporting a new campaign called Big Solar 4 Townsville. We want to hear parishioners' ideas about renewable energy and creating sustainable jobs in the Townsville Diocese!

Prep Enrolment

Families seeking enrolment of their child into Prep for 2020 or 2021 are invited to complete an Application for Enrolment, available on our website, in the link below, or alternatively collect an application package from the School Office.

As we are anticipating that there will continue to be strong demand for placements for 2020, it is important that applications are received by the school as soon as possible.

Please note that if you have a sibling of a current St Kieran’s student you will also need to complete an enrolment application for your child for Prep 2020. Students enrolled at St Joseph’s Kindergarten or St Mary Mackillop Early Learning Centre are also required to complete an application form.

St Kieran's Catholic School works in partnership with St Joseph’'s Catholic School and Good Shepherd Parish to coordinate the Prep enrolment process so that the best opportunity is afforded to all.

Physical Education with Mrs Lloyd

We have had a tremendous start to the term with a busy and exciting athletics day, a Rugby League MISSA trial, District cross country carnival and on the weekend, 3 of our students went to Cloncurry to represent Mount Isa in the North West touch football trials!

Our athletics carnival saw some amazing and talented students battle it out for age champion. There was tremendous participation in the new 1500m event which was wonderful to see. Everything ran smoothly on Friday and the teacher/parent races were heaps of fun!

There were lots of parent helpers on the day and we sincerely thank each and every one of you - your support throughout the day is extremely appreciated!

Congratulations to our winning house, Corella for 2019! Also, to our age champions for 2019:

09 Yrs Boys - Charlie Iraci
09 Yrs Girls - Scarlett Venz
10 Yrs Boys - Fletcher Choyce
10 Yrs Girls - Jess Tokawa
11 Yrs Boys - James Kleinman
11 Yrs Girls - Alli Thomson
12 Yrs Boys - Dylan Moore
12 Yrs Girls - Hannah Cama

If your student got a first or second in an age championship event, they will be invited to participate in the District Athletics carnival for 10-12 year olds next week. Notes will go home Tuesday 14th May.

A massive congratulations to all students who competed in the District Cross Country event held last week. Our students once again were amazing young people at the event - everyone who competed should be so proud of themselves. A big shout-out goes to Alli Thomson who won her age event, James Kleinman who came 3rd and Hayley Winks who came 4th in their age events.
